That is a great question. I would think ...Lorenzo,

That is a great question. I would think that given the relatively weak bats of the 3 catchers the Padres would be looking at (Hundley, Torrealba and Ryan) I would think they would keep a 5th outfielder based on their current roster.

Hairston Jr can also play all 4 infield spots, but I would like to see the Padres pick up another middle infield utility type. There just isn't anyone in the minors I would feel comfortable seeing take either Cabrera's or Eckstein's place if they were injured for an extended period like they were last season.WebSoulSurferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03385605335746684528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5020322.post-29499516553367447662010-02-04T11:42:49.558-08:002010-02-04T11:42:49.558-08:00Well, at this point, it looks like they're try...Well, at this point, it looks like they're trying for Torrealba. If that happens, I've got a question: will the Padres carry three catchers and four outfielders, or will they just use two catchers and keep five outfielders?

My take is that the Padres lost both primary catchers last year AND the year before, and had two minor league catchers for significant portions of both years. Hundley had off-season hernia surgery, and I wonder if they want him squatting every inning of every game early in the season.

There are a couple intriguing candidates for fifth outfielder, like Cunningham, but Gerry Hairston and Salazar can also play outfield, so they're deep there. I'd keep three catchers, but there's no telling what's going on in the minds of the Padres' brain trust.

LorenzoAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
