The San Diego Padres' David Eckstein continued his white hot hitting in clutch situations as he drove in catcher Nick Hundley for what proved to be the winning run with 2 outs in the top of the 12th inning in Atlanta tonight.
Eckstein was hitting an incredible .366/.422/.561/.983 with runners in scoring position and 2 outs for the Padres this season coming into tonight's game.
Mat Latos, widely thought to be the savior for the beleaguered Padres pitching staff going into 2010, was dominating. Latos threw 7 scoreless innings, giving up just 2 hits and no walks while striking out 4 in just 89 pitches.
Heath Bell gave up 2 hits, a walk and 1 run in the 9th inning to blow his 3rd save of the season. Bell has saved 30 games while blowing just 3 save opportunities.
Braves rookie reliever Kris Medlen took the loss. Joe "Becky" Thatcher got the win and Edward Mujica got the save for the Padres.

Latos rebounds well
Tuesday August 25, 2009
After giving up 12 earned runs in 7 2/3 innings over his last two starts, San Diego Padres future ace Mat Latos rebounded well to hold the Atlanta Braves scoreless through 7 innings.
In a dominating performance, Latos allowed only 2 singles and no walks while striking out 4 in just 89 pitches.
In an effort by the Padres brass to not overtax his arm after he only pitched 56 innings in 2008, Latos is likely to get just one more start this season. This should bring his innings pitched to about 120 on the 2009 season between 3 levels of baseball.
Legions of Padres "stathead" fans are hoping that Latos doesn't pitch more than 5 1/3 innings in next start and keeps his major league innings pitched under 50 so that he will still be officially a rookie next season.
Unfortunately, the Padres bullpen, in a determined effort, blew the 1-0 lead Latos left them with. Luke Gregerson loaded the bases before getting through the 8th without giving up a run and in the 9th, Heath Bell gave up a two out single to blow his 3rd save of the season.
Gregerson and Bell gave up 3 times as many base runners in 2 innings than Latos gave up in 7 innings.

Gaudin gets pounded - Again!
Wednesday August 5, 2009
Chad Gaudin has been showing why the Cubs cut him loose before the season in his last few outings and today's game should be the nail in his coffin.
In his 4th consecutive loss today Gaudin gave up 9 hits, 2 walks and 6 runs in 3.1 innings to the Atlanta Braves to raise his ERA to 5.13 on the season.
If his burgeoning ERA isn't enough, his ludicrous 54 BB in 105 innings should be enough to punch his ticket for the pen or the minors. Occasionally the guy will pitch a good game, (5 quality starts in his last 13 starts since the beginning of June) but the bad games FAR outweigh anything positive he has done recently.
So who is the next young gun to get a shot at the Padres starting rotation?
LeBlanc again? Frieri? Carrillo?
On a side note:
Have you noticed how well Joe "Becky" Thatcher pitches with nothing on the line and his team down by a ton of runs? His BAA with the bases empty is .220. In appearances where the team is down by 4 + runs he has a sub 1.00 ERA and the opposing team hits .222.
Have you also noticed how absolutely putrid he is with men on base and the lead on the line? The guy has pitched in 24 games and has ZERO holds. Not a single one. With RISP he has a .318 BAA and has allowed a .484 OBP. In late and close games opposing batters hit .75 and in tie games the opposing team bats .500 with a .667 OBP!!
In other words the guy CHOKES with men in scoring position or in anything resembling a pressure situation.
Can you say head case?

Peavy trade is NOT dead!
Tuesday November 18, 2008
I keep hearing rumors that the Peavy trade is dead. That he will be a Padre next year.
I don't think anyone who follows baseball closely thought Peavy would be the first deal of the year. So why are so many lamenting or celebrating the fact that he hasn't been traded already?
Of the big deals to be made CC will sign undoubtedly first and set the tone and ceiling for all the other signings and trades.
Once CC has found a $140+ million home, then all the other guys will have an idea of what they can ask for.
Burnett, Lowe and company will have a better idea what they are worth in this market once Sabathia is signed. Once those guys get serious offers and the Braves/Cubs/Mets/etc... can't match them, THEN Peavy will be traded to the Braves or Cubs or whomever.
I read that Wren said they were not actively pursuing a trade for Peavy.
I read where Towers said the trade with the Braves was dead and that the Cubs were the only option.
Do they all think we are stupid?
Of COURSE Atlanta is still in the running for Peavy. They are POSTURING! They are trying to say, "we have other options to pursue" so we won't give as much as you are asking for.
Well, unless they are going to outbid the Yankees, then they are not going to sign Sabathia, Burnett or Lowe.
Who else could possibly be an option that would preclude trading for Peavy? No one!
We know the Braves don't WANT to give up top prospects, who does, but they WILL give up top prospects for a pitcher of Peavy's caliber when push comes to shove.
With the recent signing of Dempster and the offers we have seen from the Yankees to Sabathia and Burnett, it is highly likely that the Braves will break down and give the Padres what they are asking for, regardless of what Wren is trying to feed the media.
Dempster signed for 4 years at $13 million per year.
Sabathia was offered 6 years/$140 million earlier this week.
Burnett was offered 5 years/$80 million today.
So what is a CY Young winning, 27 year old pitcher worth over the next 5 years? Certainly more than the $78 million contract he is currently signed to.
I would guess more than the Braves were offering the Padres for him prior to the start of free agent players being able to negotiate with every team on the 14th.
And I am not the only one that thinks that that a trade for Peavy will eventually happen before teh start of the 2009 season.
Petter Gammons seems to think so.
Frank Wren apparently told Peter Gammons he thinks the Braves will get the trade done. Yes the same Braves GM Wren who said just 3 days ago that active negotiations were over.
In a conversation with Corey Brock of MLB.com, Kevin Towers said that he wasn't ruling out continued negotiations with the Braves.
So please, no more about this trade being done. Its still November. We won't even see pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training until February. If you see Peavy reporting to the Padres camp in Peoria, then it may be dead. until then it is very much alive.
