Web gave me a couple of subjects he had wanted to cover and asked me to take a stab at them in his absence.
Today I chose to cover a subject that most people were saying was not possible. From what we have seen from the first month of baseball is not only possible, Its happening.
5 Reasons Why the Padres will be Better in 2010
#1 - The Padres had a .284 babip in 2009 - the 2nd lowest in baseball.
They were unlucky to the tune of 15 points. As Web would say, they are due for a regression towards the mean.
#2 - The Padres had a 96 OPS+ in 2009. Good for 8th best in NL. While all the "experts" on ESPN, MLB Networks and the other sports media were saying the Padres were the worst offensive team in NL, they went out and ranked right in the middle of the pack in park adjusted offense. Park Factors are still beyond the understanding of many in the media.
#3 - The Padres hit 141 hr in 2009. This was good for 13th in NL even though they play home games in Petco. Petco Park depresses HR totals 30% overall. Even playing in Petco, the Padres total was much closer to the league average of 155 than the 16th worst in NL of 95 hr. With Blanks and Venable playing a full season and the return of Scott Hairston, the Padres should produce better power numbers in 2010.
#4 - WPA - the Padres were 5th in the NL at 1.96. WPA is the measure of how well you do in high leverage situations. The Padres obviously did well despite playing half their games in Petco.
#5 - The Padres had a 16.1 WAR in 2009, which ranked 9th in the NL. WAR, or wins above replacement, measures how well a team does offensively and defensively compared to how a AAA player being called up would do. In 2010 the Padres will see improvements in offense for the reasons covered above and will improve on defense to an even greater degree just by having Venable start regularly in RF and having Blanks play in LF instead of the defensively challanged Headley.
What does all that add up to?
The Padres were unlucky offensively last season, play in the toughest park in baseball to hit in and still ended up being a league average team in almost every category.
A little luck, a litle improvement and some young players getting to play every day and for a full seasoin will = a better offensive team.
Defensively the improvement will be even greater with some talented defensive players getting to be on the field daily and Chase Headley being moved to his natural position at 3B from Lf where every ball was an adventure for him.
The Ancillary to the Padres being better?
Why these teams in the NL West will not improve in 2010.
Arizona
They had a team 88 OPS+ with a .299 babip in 2009. They were neither lucky nor unlucky and they stunk with the bat. This season they added 2 players in Kelly Johnson who has an 83 OPS+ and Adam LaRoche who had among the highest Babip in the league amongst 1B at .328 and among the lowest wOBA combined with consistently below average defense for his career, that is a step backwards from a misearable 2009 campaign.
Yes I realize that Johnson has 9 HR right now, but regression towards the mean is a bitch. Expect a .240 average with 15-20 HR by the end of the season after he gets hurt again. He has already missed some games with injuries and there is no reason to believe that trend wont continue.
Los Angeles Dodgers
In 2009 they had a team 104 OPS+ with a .309 BABIP about 10 points toward lucky. They lost a boatload of position players including several starters. For Example they replaced a OPS+ 109 from Orlando Hudson with a 68 from Blake Dewitt at 2B. Their backup in the oufield went from OPS+ 105 Juan Pierre to OPS+ 89 Reed Johnson. Manny Ramirez is a shadow of his steroid self and has already hit the DL once. Same old Manny. Now they have the punch and judy Xavier Paul starting in LF and AJ Ellis backing up at catcher.
Their pitching staff is in even more trouble. They lost inning eating middle of the rotation starters Randy Wolf and Jon Garland and replaced them with Charlie Haeger and Vicente Padilla (who is already on the DL).
San Francisco
They had a team 81 OPS+ and NL worst .305 wOBA in 2009. To remedy that incredibly bad offense they added Aubrey Huff and his .297 wOBA and 81 OPS+ to bat cleanup? This guy could barely secure a starting position on the Orioles roster in 2009. The 35 year old Mark DeRosa and his below league average 97 OPS+ and .327 wOBA is the offensive savior that is giving Giants fans hope? Give me a break. He is a #6 hitter even on the Giants.
The bottom line in ATT Park? They can't hit, they can't run and they are not very good defensively. They are an old club and do not have much depth. Even with the best pitching staff in baseball, the Giants cannot afford even a single injury if they want to compete. I expect them to compete early and then fade as injuries to an old club take their toll.

Drew Macias now a Diamondback

Well, we wont be seeing Drew Macias being used like a yo yo by the Padres to fill spots in the outfield as he is now the property of the Arizona diamondbacks.
Macias was called up and sent down 9 times in 2009 by the Padres when injuries struck. He is widely regarded as the best defensive outfielder in the Padres organization, but had never hit well enough to stick at the ML level.
He was signed to a minor league contract by the Diamondbacks with an invitation to spring training.

Padres lose 4th in last 6 to last place D'Backs

I guess Kevin Correia knew something the rest of us had missed. The Padres bullpen just cannot get the job done against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Last night the bullpen came in and gave up a grand slam to give away the game.
Today at Chase Field in Phoenix, Edward Mujica, a guy who should still be part of the bullpen gave up 4 runs and the rest of his pen mates came in and gave up 3 more runs.
The Padres lose the game 7-4 and another series against the last place Diamondbacks.
In their last series against the Diamonbacks in San Diego both losses were on the bullpen (Heath Bell and Adam Russell).
In the series before that in Arizona in July two of the 3 losses were on the bullpen.
See a pattern here?

A lesson for the Padres starting pitchers, make sure you pitch a complete game if you want a win against the Diamondbacks.
Padres come home to finish up their season with 2 against the Dodgers and 3 against the Giants.

Complete Game Shutout for Correia

Kevin Correia threw a complete game shutout and the San Diego Padres defeated the last place Arizona Diamondbacks 4-0 tonight at Chase Field.
Correia allowed just 6 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7 on 109 pitches for his first career shutout and the first for a Padres pitcher since 2006. It was an awesome performance by a guy I have pegged as a mediocre pitcher on occasion.
Correia has been outstanding the last 2 months going 5-2 with a 2.54 ERA in his last 11 starts and has lowered his era from 4.75 at the end of July to 3.89 after tonight's game. In fact he has not given up a run since the 2nd inning of a Padres loss to these same Diamondbacks on September 14th, a stretch of 20 innings.
Folks I love being wrong about things like that.
Padres are now 15-7 in September.

A total cluster on defense by Padres results in a win

Today was a complete cluster for the Padres.
In addition to committing 3 errors, two by Cabrera who just did not have his head in the game, there were at least 5 of the Diamondbacks 11 hits that should have been outs.
Several normally good players made bad plays and several bad fielding players proved why they should never play the field.
But they won 6-5 in 10 innings over the Diamondbacks this afternoon at Petco.
The Padres pulled it out, but by all rights, they should have lost that game.
Adrian Gonzalez crushed his 38th home run of the season, a pinch hit 2 run shot with 2 out, to tie the game up at 5 in the 9th. Then Cabrera atoned for his mental mistakes by squibbing a seeing eye single to right to drive in Luis Durango for the winning run in the 10th.
Durango, who was called up from AA on Monday, was one of the few bright spots in the game going 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a sac. He demonstrated that he is not the best fielding LF in the league, but he looked relaxed at the plate and showed off his blazing speed with 2 bunt singles and an infield single then by swiping his first bag on his first attempt to get himself into position to score the winning run.
Mujica went 4 2/3 giving up 2 runs on 6 hits with no walks. Really should have been just 1 run, but Black treated him like a regular starter, not a guy that has started just one game since 2004 and left him in too long.
Black really seems to have no concept when a pitcher is done. He just does not recognize the signs. Which is strange, since he was a pitcher himself.
Bell got the win for the Padres. I guess it was because he shaved off his goatee and not because he finally started locating his pitches.
Yusmeiro Petit took the loss for the Diamondbacks.
The Padres climbed to 66-81 on the season with the win. They still have a mathematical shot at .500 ball.
The last place Diamondbacks fell to 64-83.

Padres give one away to Diamondbacks

The San Diego Padres gave a game away to the Arizona Diamondbacks tonight at Petco Park, leaving the bases loaded twice and men in scoring position 2 other times.
They also looked like minor leaguers against a pitcher, Billy Buckner of the Diamondbacks with a 7.30 ERA coming into this game.
Kevin Correia went 6 1/3 and gave up 2 runs on 7 hits and 2 walks with 7 so. Adam Russell gave up 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks in the 10th to take the loss.
Tony Gwynn went 3-5 but disappeared when it counted, twice failing to even be able to put a bunt on play. It was a sad display of ineptness at bunting. If you cannot hit for power or average you BETTER be able to bunt.

We got to see both Sean Gallagher and Aaron Poreda pitch tonight. Gallagher was wild while facing just 2 batter in the 9th. Poreda threw just 1 pitch to get the final out in the 10th.

After being on base 5 times in 5 at bats tonight (a single, a double and 3 bb), the post game interview let us hear that not only has Jr hit like his HOF daddy, he even sounds like him.
Oh yeah, and the Padres won the game over the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4.
After a shaky start in the first when he allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, a passed ball and a hbp, Kevin Correia settled down and shut down the D'backs for the next 5 innings to get his 2nd win of the season. In all he allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, 1 walk and a hbp in 6 IP.
Chase Headley started his 1st game at 3B this season, but gave way to Kevin Kouzmanoff in the 7th inning after being hit by a pitch for the 2nd time in the game by D'backs pitchers.
After not scoring a run in the first 14 innings of the series, the Padres exploded for 6 runs in the 6th inning.
Will Venable started it out with a double to right, Blanco moved him to 3rd with a sac fly and Chris Burke drove him home with a single. Edgar Gonzalez flied out for the 2nd out. Then it got fun. Gwynn Jr. walked and Eckstein drive in Burke. Adrian Gonzalez was walked to load the bases. Then Headley took a pitch in the leg from Dan Schlereth to drive a run. Giles drives in two with a single and then the guy who started it all off in the 6th, drove in the 6th run of the inning with a single to left.

The Padres improve to 26-29 on the season.
Adrian Gonzalez has now been walked 15 times in the past 8 games. With no one to protect him in the lineup, Adrian is being pitched around by other teams rather than give him a chance to beat them.

Why does Bud Black seem to believe that starters have to go 6?
Time after time he leaves pitchers in after they have shown they are done.
Correia got hit because he was tired and elevating pitches in the 5th last night, so what does Black do? Bring him back to give up 4 more runs in the 6th.
That loss is squarely on the manager's shoulders. He should know the signs to look for in a tired pitcher, but he doesn't seem to have that ability.
Tonight Peavy struggles through the 6th, elevating his pitches and missing his spots. So what does Black do? He brings him back in the 7th so he can give up another run before giving way to Gregerson. Why did he come out at all?
Luckily, the Diamondbacks bullpen seems intent on giving up as many runs as they possibly can and immediately gave up 3 runs on 4 walks, 2 errors and 2 singles in the 8th inning tonight.
Even Greg Burke giving up a run in the 9th wasn't enough for the Diamondbacks, as the Padres beat them 8-5. It was just the 2nd run the Padres bullpen has given up since Duaner Sanchez gave up 4 runs on May 14th. Peavy went 6 1/3 innings giving up 8 hits and 4 runs while striking out 5 for his 5th win and Heath Bell pitched to one batter in the 9th for his 13th save.
Adrian Gonzalez hit his league leading 18th home run and the Padres 1 through 4 hitters went 8 for 17 and scored all 8 Padres runs.
The Padres are now 24-23 while the Diamondbacks fall to 20-27.

The San Diego Padres comeback fell short and they fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 last night in Phoenix.
After starting pitcher Kevin Correia got in trouble by getting pitches up to the #8 and #9 hitters in the Diamondback's batting order and giving up two runs in the 5th, manager Bud Black made a critical mistake in sending him back out for the 6th inning.
Correia left pitch after pitch up in the zone and got pounded for 5 hits and 4 more runs.
Sometimes you wonder what Black is saving the bullpen for?
The Padres hitters once again mounted a valiant comeback against the Diamondbacks bullpen scoring 5 runs in the 8th and 9th innings, but came up just short on Kevin Kouzmanoff's fly ball to the warning track in the 9th.
Brian Giles continued his hot streak going 3 for 5 in the game. Giles has gone 6 for 10 in his last 4 games. He is still hitting just .189 on the season.
Diamondbacks starter Max Scherzer went 7 innings giving up just 6 hits and 2 runs while striking out 10 for his 2nd career win in 16 starts.
Tonights rubber game is at 6:40pm pacific and pits Padres Ace Jake Peavy against Diamondbacks rookie Billy Buckner.
Do you think Buckner may have gotten teased just a bit about his name? How many times was he asked about the error in 1986? I don't believe that this kid is related to Billy Buck, but I would love to hear about what having that famous (infamous?) name has put him through.

On this day set aside so we can show our appreciation for the brave men and women who served in the military to keep our country safe and free, the San Diego Padres fought back from a 7-1 deficit in the 5th inning to post a 9-7 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Starting pitcher Chad Gaudin's struggles with control continued as he gave up 5 hits and 5 walks while allowing 7 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
In my opinion, Gaudin's control went away when he shaved the squirrell off his chin.
Adrian Gonzalez hit his league leading 17th home run in the 4th inning for the Padres 1st run.
The Padres plated 5 runs in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to tie the game at 7-7, then Chase Headley hit a 420 foot blast to left field with Henry Blanco on 1st base to drive in the go ahead runs.
Heath Bell came in to shut the Diamondbacks down for his 13th save of the season.
Catcher Nick Hundley and manager Bud Black were thrown out of the game by home plate umpire Eric Cooper on a disputed call at the plate in the 6th inning. Cooper blew the play, but it didn't matter as the Padres pummelled the Diamondbacks in the late innings.
Take a litle sip of the kool aid folks, the Padres are now 23-22 on the season.

Starting pitcher Chad Gaudin's struggles with control continued as he gave up 5 hits and 5 walks while allowing 7 earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
In my opinion, Gaudin's control went away when he shaved the squirrell off his chin.
Adrian Gonzalez hit his league leading 17th home run in the 4th inning for the Padres 1st run.
The Padres plated 5 runs in the 8th and 1 in the 9th to tie the game at 7-7, then Chase Headley hit a 420 foot blast to left field with Henry Blanco on 1st base to drive in the go ahead runs.
Heath Bell came in to shut the Diamondbacks down for his 13th save of the season.
