First round draft pick Donavan Tate's professional debut will have to wait. He has officially been sidelined until Spring Training 2010 with what was originally described by the Padres as an abdominal strain and now is officially being called a "stress reaction to his pubic bone".
My flies on the wall have said that it is actually a tear of his inguinal ligament and that he tore it in batting practice on his first day as a Padre. It sure seems that Tate came in cold after not swinging a bat for months and just tried to do too much to impress the Padres players and brass.
In other injury news, Mike Adams, the Padres most effective reliever the past 2 months, was placed on the DL with an posterior? strain in his surgically repaired right shoulder.
While the Padres are claiming it is not in the same place as the torn labrum that was repaired surgically last season and caused Adams to miss the end of the 2008 and the first 2 months of the 2009 season, it obviously is related.
I would not expect to see Adams back this year or, if the Padres luck/curse continues, maybe not even the beginning of next year.
If it was not for a late rush/rash of injuries to New York Mets players, the Padres would once again be leading the league in player days on the DL. As it is they will come into the last days of the season neck and neck to set a new major league record for injuries.
If they win/lose the injury race, it will be the 2nd straight season that the Padres have set a major league record in player days on the disabled list.

Peter Gammons of ESPN has interesting news about the Padres deal with Donavan Tate on his blog today.
According to Gammons, the Padres have had a $6.7 million deal done with Tate for 5 days, but the commissioners office would not approve it until late today so that it did not impact other signings.

Outstanding news on the draft for Padres fans.
According to Keith Law of ESPN, the Padres signed 2nd round pick Everett Williams to a $775,000 signing bonus.
Baseball America's Jim Callis reported earlier today that Padres 1st round pick Donavan Tate is in San Diego in preparation to sign his contract.
Andy Marks of the Ocala (FL) Star-Banner reported yesterday that 4th round pick Keyvius Sampson had signed a deal worth 2nd round money without specifying an amount. That means the deal is been bewtten $450k and $705k according to Marks. Sampson and the Padres reportedly agreed to terms last week, but it was officially accepted by Major League Baseball yesterday.

Padres take 3 of the top HS Centerfielders in last 2 drafts

Don't look now, but the Padres have taken 3 of the top 10 HS outfield prospects in the first two rounds of the last 2 drafts.
Jaff Decker last season and Donavan Tate and Everett Williams this season. These kids could be pushing more established players like Cedric Hunter, Kellen Kulbacki and Luis Durango soon.
When you look at that huge outfield in Petco, it cries out for fast outfielders with power at all 3 positions. That is what those 3 players show promise of being someday with a little luck.
You probably thought, maybe even hoped, that was all I would have to say on the draft? Sorry to disappoint you. There is still more.
I have spent several hours over the past 2 days watching film of this kid out of Duke, Nathan Frieman. When I saw the pick come across the board in the 8th round I was surprised at the choice. He is 6'8" and images of Richie Sexson and Dave Kingman and their all or nothing swings and low BA and high SO rate flashed through my head.
Then I saw the film. This guy is a brute and he crushes balls, but he has a great eye and doesn't strike out much. He has pretty quick feet at first and can pick the ball pretty good. He is also a Rhodes Scholar candidate according to Paul DePodesta.
He may quickly add to the plethora of good power hitting prospects at the 1B position in the Padres system.
