Henry Blanco signed a 1 year $1.5 million deal to be the back up catcher for the New York Mets today.
The 38 year old Blanco spent the 2009 season with the Padres hitting .235 with six homers and 16 RBI in 204 at-bats while catching 60 games.
Many writers, including those on this blog, felt he would return to the Padres in 2010 to continue to mentor the Padres young starting catcher Nick Hundley.
Instead he will be mentoring Josh Thole, a great catching prospect in New York.

Don't look now, but the Padres could very well finish the 2009 season with a better record than the Mets.
As it stands tonight the surging Padres have a 63-78 record (.447) and the slumping Mets have a 62-77 record (.446).
While the Padres went 15-14 in August and have won 6 of their last 8 games, the Mets went 12-17 in August (1-3 against the Padres) and have lost 5 of their last 8 games.
Ouch. Do you think Omar Minaya should keep his job if that happens? After all the Mets were widely picked to win the NL East over the World Champion Phillies before the season started.
Yes, the Mets have been struck by a Padre-like run of injuries this season, but with a payroll north of $130 million, is there any excuse for having a worse record than the Padres and their $36.7 million payroll?

Latos K's 7k in 4th win as a Padre

Mat Latos continued to impress in his 5th start as a Padre, striking out 7 while only allowing 4 hits and 1 run in 6 full innings to earn his 4th win as the Padres defeated the Mets 3-1 at Petco Park tonight.
Latos only mistake was a fastball to the light hitting Alex Cora in the 1st inning, who connected for a solo shot to right center. After that Latos settled down and recorded five scoreless innings.
The Padres were once again in double digits for hits. This is the 2nd time in the past 3 games and 8th time in the past 13 games that the Padres have had 10 or more hits. That is a very encouraging stat for a team that plays in the hardest park in baseball to hit in and has the lowest batting average and runs scored in baseball.
Tonights game was not without controversy as Everth Cabrera was called out on a play that he was obviously safe at home plate.
The Padres bullpen was once again outstanding as 4 pitchers combined for 3 scoreless innings and Heath Bell earned his 28th save of the season.

Cabrera giveth and Cabrera taketh away

In the 1st inning an error by Everth Cabrera led to the New York Mets only two runs of game.
Known for his speed on the base paths not his power, Cabrera atoned for his early miscue by hitting hitting a walk off grand slam off Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez in the bottom of the 9th to give the Padres a 6-2 win. It was KRod's 5th blown save of the year and the slumping Mets 7th loss in the last 10 games.
Kevin Correia looked snake bit after that error allowing 6 hits, 2 walks and 2 unearned runs on 67 pitches through 3 innings. He then settled down allowing only just one Met to reach base over the next 3 innings. His line 6 IP, 7 Hits, 2 Runs, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 HR to lower his ERA to 4.51 on the season.
After 2 scoreless innings from Joe Thatcher and Mike Adams, Heath Bell came in and pitched a scoreless 9th to earn the win, his 4th of the season.
Former Padre Oliver Perez pitched 6 1/3 innings of 2 hit ball striking out 7 and giving up just a single run before giving way to Brian Stokes in the 7th. Perez has literally had an up and down year after signing a 3 year $36 million contract in the off season, being sent down to AAA on several occasions and throwing just 48.2 innings with a 7.03 ERA coming into tonight's game.

The Padres recorded double digit hits for the 3rd time in this home stand, new Padre Clayton Richard got his first win with the team and they defeat the New York Mets 8-3 tonight at Petco Park.
Adrian Gonzalez continued his hot hitting with a sac fly and a 2 run home run, his 29th of the season, to drive in 3 runs. Henry Blanco went 3 for 4 and David Eckstein walked, hit a double and scored 2 runs.
The only blemishes on an otherwise great game on both sides of the ball was 3 walks by starter Richard and an error by Tony Gwynn Jr with 2 out in the 6th inning.

In an otherwise outstanding outing against the New York Mets at Petco tonight, 3 walks and an error by Tony Gwynn Jr. in the 6th inning limited Clayton Richard's 2nd start as a San Diego Padre to 5 2/3 innings.
The Padres offense put up 7 runs in the first 3 innings paced by Adrian Gonzalez's 29th home run and 3 rbi to stake Richard to a big lead and he responded with 5 strong innings.
His line - 5.2 IP/5 hits/3 runs/0 earned runs/4 walks/5 k's/0 home runs.
Richard threw 99 pitches, 60 for strikes, before being pulled after walking Omir Santos.
Yahoo seems to think that the runs were earned, but since there was an error, none of the runs that followed are earned. Regardless, if the bullpen can hold the lead, Richard will end the evening with his 2nd win in a Padres uniform.
