Tim Stauffer RHP/SP $450,000.00
Clayton Richard LHP/SP $450,000.00
Totals $39,825,000.00
Yes I know there are way too many pitchers. 16 in all.
So subtract $450k for each one or $1.8 million
That leaves:
Total 2010 Padres Major League Payroll - $38,025,000.00
For those of you who are wondering what the rest of the guys on the 40 man roster will make in the minors, the AAA minimum is $2150 per month. $12,900 for a 6 month season. 10 of them won't push the payroll over $38.5 million if they are all making 4 times the minimum.
So there you have it in black and white,
The 2010 San Diego Padres Major League Payroll - $38.025 million.
Now there will likely be callups from the minors as players hit the DL and those guys will have to be paid the minor league minimum while they are in a Padres uniform, but if there are 5 extra players on the roster every day for the entire season then the team is still only right at $40 million. And that's only if they pay every non arbitration eligible player $450k. They only have to pay them $400k so that is not likely to happen.
I don't think that is quite in the spirit of promising the payroll would start with a 4. Right now it doesn't.
I feel a little ripped off..
I believed Jeff Moorad and Jed Hoyer when they promised $40 million or more in payroll. To nickel and dime your way into a payroll that is still at least $5 million less than last seasons opening day payroll is questionable at best. An insult to fans at the worst.
I do think this team is as good as the one that took the field on opening day last season, but not by much and to have the lowest payroll in baseball after promising more is embarrassing and not a good start to the fans relationship with Moorad, Hoyer and company.
The worst part is we know that Adrian Gonzalez, the best player on the squad, is going away mid season and he may be joined by Heath Bell, Jon Garland and others pushing the payroll down even further.
The Padres need to step it up! They need to have more than the MLB lowest $38.025 million payroll.
Thats my opinion. Now what do you think?

Hoyer new Padres Gm?
Saturday October 24, 2009
The rumors are that Jed Hoyer has been hired by the Padres as their new GM.
Peter Gammons Twittered that that the Red Sox had a going away party for Hoyer several days ago and Bernie Wilson is reporting that Hoyer has already been hired. but no word from PadreVille.
The North County Times is saying that Hoyer has been hired and there will be a press conference Monday afternoon to confirm it, but the Padres have not yet officially called a press conference.
They have until Tuesday to announce it, as major league baseball won't allow announcements during the World Series.
As of Wednesday October 21st Moorad was saying "I'm doing some phone follow-ups and close to making a decision."
I have started to distrust the Padres new CEO Jeff Moorad, and its not just the lies about ticket prices. Moorad said on October 3rd, that he had interviewed 3 candidates and was close to making a decision. He didn't interview Hoyer until Thursday October 15th after the Red Sox were eliminated from the playoffs. He interviewed Ng two days later.
Moorad said he wanted someone with better organizational leadership skills and that was strategic planner.
Hoyer is known as a sabremetric wiz kid and has worked in the major league player personnel and contract negotiation, but has no experience with managing subordinates or with player development. Hoyer has never run a department of his own.
Ben Cherington handled the draft and player development for the Red Sox and oversaw all minor league scouting.
All those things point to the fact that Moorad was either been turned down by one of his earlier candidates or by the commissioners office.
What I find most interesting is that in his time as the CEO of two different clubs, Jeff Moorad has already chosen one guy who learned from Epstein and is now rumored to have hired another, while Epstein himself learned his craft from Kevin Towers.
That is kind of like hiring the assistant coach of a guy that used to be the assistant coach for John Wooden, when you have John Wooden on your staff already.
If Hoyer was hired by the Padres, and it appears from the consistent rumors that he was, then we will see how he does on a team with a low budget. His entire career he has helped negotiate contracts for a team that had nearly an unlimited payroll.
Now he will be working for a small market team with a $40 million payroll in 2010 and a payroll that has averaged in the bottom third in baseball over the past 15 years.

1st Clues to Padres Possible New Ownership Appear
In an article on Yahoo from Bob Baum of the AP, Jeff Moorad, CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks has reportedly resigned to pursue ownership in the San Diego Padres.
So we have our first clues as to whom the Moores may be selling their controlling share of the Padres.
Moorad is a former agent, who took over as CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks when Jerry Colangelo sold controlling interest in the team to a group or minority partners that included current managing general partner Ken Kendrick and Paul Schloss.
