Padres wave Baek, Hill and Floyd

Today the San Diego Padres announced that they have waived Pitchers Cha Seung Baek, Shawn Hill and Outfielder/Pinch Hitter Cliff Floyd.

All three players spent most if not all of the 2009 season on the DL.

Baek injured his forearm in Spring Training and injured his elbow during a rehab assignment in July. He never pitched for the Padres during the 2009 regular season.

The oft injured Hill was signed by the Padres on March 23rd and made just 3 starts before injuring his elbow against Pittsburgh on April 25th. He went under the knife for his 2nd Tommy John procedure and 5th over all surgery in June and was lost for the season.

Floyd was signed by the Padres to be a left handed power bat off the bench and to be the DH in interleague play they have been missing in recent years. Instead he injured his leg in spring training and was on the big league roster for just 18 days and 16 at bats before tearing the labrum in his right shoulder and going back on the DL for the rest of the 2009 season on June 18th.

This move was certainly not unexpected as none were expected to return in 2010. Baek and Hill will likely still be rehabbing from surgery next season and an injury plagued 36 year old Floyd may have seen his last days in a major league uniform.

The move cleared room on the 40 man roster which the Padres used to add Eulogio De La Cruz.

In other Padres news reliever Greg Burke underwent debridement surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder to remove dead or damaged tissue in the hopes that would allow healthy tissue to heal faster.

Cliff Floyd could join Padres on Saturday

In his Twitter post this afternoon, Corey Brock of MLB.com says that Cliff Floyd has joined the team in Denver and if all goes well in BP and fielding practice, he will be activated for Saturday's game.

Floyd was sidelined to start the season with a shoulder injury and then suffered through fluid and pain on his knee.

Floyd would provide much needed power off the bench. Floyd is a defensive liability at this points o don't expect him to get much time in the field, but he is still one of the better left handed power bats in the NL off the bench so he could prove very valuable in interleague and as a pinch hitter.

I believe that if he does well over the next month as a DH and pinch hitter that the Padres will trade him as the deadline grows nearer.

Cliff Floyd to have MRI on ailing knee

Cliff Floyd is returning to San Diego to have an MRI on his knee. Floyd's knee has had to be drained twice in the past three weeks.

Looks like the Padres in woes are returning in force in 2009. Already pitchers Mark Worrell(season ending elbow injury), Cha Seung Baek and Walter Silva have succumb to injuries since the start of spring training and promising young backup SS Everth Cabrera broke the hamate bone in his hand and is on the 60 day DL.

Floyd, who was already on the 15 day DL since late in Spring Training for a shoulder injury, has a history of knee problems and may have to have surgery and miss substantial time.

On a brighter note, Cha Seung Baek came out of his bullpen session on Tuesday well and may be able to start a rehab start as soon as Monday.

Padres Batting Projections for 2009.

I have broken down my projections into two different types:

• Projections based on 2008 stats adjusted to 600 AB equivalents in 2009.

• Projections based on 600 AB and Adjustments for Historical Improvement and Declines for Players Age and Length of ML Service.

While neither of these are perfect projection methods as injuries and inexplicable declines do happen(see Khalil Greene 2008), but these two types of projections will give you a chance to chose for yourself where you think their performance may end up.

Bench spot projections are based on their 2008 abs with the exception of Burke.

If I don't get to lazy, I will be adding another post for the rest of the NL West Teams one by one in the coming weeks.

I don't know how well these tables will format here and some of my formulas seem to be rounding OPS down but here goes:
