Tonight the San Diego Padres wasted another good outing by Mat Latos to fall 3-2 in 12 innings to the Philadelphia Phillies.
Latos went 7 full innings, giving up 1 run on 5 hits (all singles) & 2 BB while striking out 6 . Another dominant outing. the result. A no decision & a team loss.
Latos has not given up more than 2 runs in a start since since the All Star break and has 3 wins, 3 no decisions and 1 loss to show for it in 7 starts.
The Padres just are not giving the kid much run support.
And from a purely subjective standpoint, it sure seems that alot of Padres aces (Yes I do consider Latos an Ace) have not had very good run support.
That got me to thinking. If that is objectively true, why is it that the Ace get so little run support?
I would guess the 1st reason is that they face the other teams ace more often than not. Two aces on the hill = less runs scored. That is why they are aces.
And that brought another thought to mind. I guess that is why Wins are not such a great indicator of how good a pitcher is performing. You can be lights out game after game like Latos has been since the All Star break and still only win 43% of your starts (3 for 7).
I guess the bottom line is, its sure nice to have a 23 year old Ace isn't it?

Latos gets last start of the season
Sunday August 30, 2009
San Diego Padres top prospect Mat Latos gets the start in Land Shark Stadium today against the Florida Marlins.
From what we have been hearing from Padres brass, this should be the last time we get to see Latos take the mound this season.
Latos had just 56 innings pitched in 2008 and the Padres GM Kevin Towers has said on several occasions that Latos would be limited to about 110-120 innings on the season. Young pitchers are much more prone to injury when they more than double the innings they pitched the previous season.
While I don't think it matters much to the Padres organization, many fans are hoping that Latos is limited to just 5 1/3 innings today in order for him to still be eligible for Rookie of the Year voting in 2010.
They may be out of luck, as through 3 today Latos is doing quite well and has throw only 43 pitches.
On a side note:
Adrian Gonzalez gets his second game off at 1st base with what the team described as a strained right bicep. We can only hope that the injury is not serious.
Oscar Salazar gets the start at 1B again today after going 3 for 4 last night.

Eckstein continues clutch hitting as Padres win in 12
Tuesday August 25, 2009
The San Diego Padres' David Eckstein continued his white hot hitting in clutch situations as he drove in catcher Nick Hundley for what proved to be the winning run with 2 outs in the top of the 12th inning in Atlanta tonight.
Eckstein was hitting an incredible .366/.422/.561/.983 with runners in scoring position and 2 outs for the Padres this season coming into tonight's game.
Mat Latos, widely thought to be the savior for the beleaguered Padres pitching staff going into 2010, was dominating. Latos threw 7 scoreless innings, giving up just 2 hits and no walks while striking out 4 in just 89 pitches.
Heath Bell gave up 2 hits, a walk and 1 run in the 9th inning to blow his 3rd save of the season. Bell has saved 30 games while blowing just 3 save opportunities.
Braves rookie reliever Kris Medlen took the loss. Joe "Becky" Thatcher got the win and Edward Mujica got the save for the Padres.

Latos rebounds well
Tuesday August 25, 2009
After giving up 12 earned runs in 7 2/3 innings over his last two starts, San Diego Padres future ace Mat Latos rebounded well to hold the Atlanta Braves scoreless through 7 innings.
In a dominating performance, Latos allowed only 2 singles and no walks while striking out 4 in just 89 pitches.
In an effort by the Padres brass to not overtax his arm after he only pitched 56 innings in 2008, Latos is likely to get just one more start this season. This should bring his innings pitched to about 120 on the 2009 season between 3 levels of baseball.
Legions of Padres "stathead" fans are hoping that Latos doesn't pitch more than 5 1/3 innings in next start and keeps his major league innings pitched under 50 so that he will still be officially a rookie next season.
Unfortunately, the Padres bullpen, in a determined effort, blew the 1-0 lead Latos left them with. Luke Gregerson loaded the bases before getting through the 8th without giving up a run and in the 9th, Heath Bell gave up a two out single to blow his 3rd save of the season.
Gregerson and Bell gave up 3 times as many base runners in 2 innings than Latos gave up in 7 innings.

Mat Latos starting to show signs of wearing down
Wednesday August 19, 2009
Promising San Diego Padres prospect Mat Latos is showing signs of tiring after throwing 109 2/3 innings this season over 3 levels of baseball from A ball to the majors.
Tonight he gave up 5 runs on 7 hits and 4 walks through 3 2/3 innings in the Padres 7-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park. He consistently left his pitches up in the zone and even though he was consistently hitting 96-97 mph on the gun, he got pounded in the 3rd and 4th innings.
With the Padres publicly saying they don't want him to go any more than double his 56 innings pitched in 2008, this was probably the last we will see of Latos starting for the Padres in 2009.
We may see a couple of outings from him coming out of the bullpen, but I doubt the Padres are willing to take a chance on him injuring himself just to extend his stay in San Diego in what is pretty much already a lost season for the team.
I would presume that after what we saw in his first 4 starts, Latos WILL be back in a Padres uniform to start the 2010 season.
Sean Gallagher is about ready to join the team and Carrillo redeemed himself in last nights start after a shaky 1st start, so Latos does not need to pitch just to fill a slot in the rotation.
Poreda may also be called up to fill his spot in the rotation.

Latos K's 7k in 4th win as a Padre
Saturday August 8, 2009
Mat Latos continued to impress in his 5th start as a Padre, striking out 7 while only allowing 4 hits and 1 run in 6 full innings to earn his 4th win as the Padres defeated the Mets 3-1 at Petco Park tonight.
Latos only mistake was a fastball to the light hitting Alex Cora in the 1st inning, who connected for a solo shot to right center. After that Latos settled down and recorded five scoreless innings.
The Padres were once again in double digits for hits. This is the 2nd time in the past 3 games and 8th time in the past 13 games that the Padres have had 10 or more hits. That is a very encouraging stat for a team that plays in the hardest park in baseball to hit in and has the lowest batting average and runs scored in baseball.
Tonights game was not without controversy as Everth Cabrera was called out on a play that he was obviously safe at home plate.
The Padres bullpen was once again outstanding as 4 pitchers combined for 3 scoreless innings and Heath Bell earned his 28th save of the season.

Latos looking like the real deal after 3 starts
Wednesday July 29, 2009
After 3 major league starts, Mat Latos has 2 wins and a 2.70 ERA after throwing an absolute gem today against the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Band Box, er..I mean Ballpark.
Latos gave up only one hit in 7 innings tonight, it just happened to be a solo home run by Jerry Hairston. One bad pitch in 86 is a pretty damn good day on the mound.
It was his longest appearance of the season and brought his total innings to 16 2/3 for the Padres and 89 for the season.
The Padres front office has said they would like to limit him to about 100 innings this year, about double his 55 innings in 2008, so we may only see 2 more starts from him before he is shut down for the rest of the season.
Watching Latos dominate so far this year and the official announcement that Sean Gallagher is the PTBNL in the Scott Hairston trade, gives me hope for the 2010 Padres pitching staff.

Latos has lots of Minor League company for Big League debut
Sunday July 19, 2009
Mat Latos takes the mound today with many minor league players around him to help him feel comfortable, including his AA catcher .
In fact only the slumping Adrian Gonzalez (.235 in June and .132 in July - can you say, "I have given up on this season" any clearer?) and Chase Headley, who has been consistent in his mediocrity this season, were Padres starters to begin the season.
Going around the diamond you find the AA Latos throwing to the AA Lobaton then Gonzalez at 1B, AAA Rodriguez at 2B, Low A Cabrera, Headley at 3B, AAA Macias in LF, AAA Gwynn in CF and AAA Venable in RF.
Today at Petco Park we have the San Diego Mission Beavers facing the Colorado Rockies.
I guess it makes sense that a minor league type crowd of about 10,000 will watch Latos make his debut. After all a minor league type team is on the field.
I guess I am one of those to blame for attendance like that at today's game. I had tickets and decided not to go.
I tried to GIVE the tickets away all week and found no takers. Found absolutely no interested parties in two front row tickets. I guess that is as good of an indication of how the rest of the season is going to go attendance wise as anything a marketing survey might find.
So Moorad, Moores and Garfinkel - Give me a reason to renew my season tickets. Shoot, give me a reason to actually attend any more games this season.
Keep me in the loop on your plans. Help me to be excited about Padres baseball again. Or look forward to many more crowds like todays.

So who is next for the ailing Padres starting rotation?
1st Wade LeBlanc gets pounded and demoted.
Then Walter Silva proves he is not a major league pitcher by getting absolutely obliterated byt he Rangers.
So who will fill those two spots in the rotation now that we know those two can't do it?
Josh Banks? Tim Stauffer? Cesar Ramos?
Or do the Padres call up top prospect Mat Latos from AA?

San Diego Padres Farm System Update
According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union Tribune, Kyle Blanks will begin playing left field for AAA Portland on Monday.
If Blanks is successful at this experiment in left field, Kevin Kouzmanoff may be traded to make room for Chase Headley at third base.
Headley is the template for the Padres move of an infielder to a corner outfield position. Headley made a successful transition from 3B to LF last season and his defense has improved this season. Blanks has superior speed to Headley, though at 6'6" and 285 he is far from the prototypical LF.
Blanks hitting .291/.391/.527/.918 with 7 hr in 31 games is forcing the Padres hand in finding a place for him to play on the big league squad.

- Kellen Kulbacki is made his first start of the season on Saturday for the AA San Antonio Missions after shoulder surgery in the off season.
- 2003 1st round draft pick Tim Stauffer is throwing well in extended spring training and should be ready to join the Missions later this week.
- Mat Latos has not allowed a run in 3 starts and 11.2 innings with the low A Ft Wayne Tincaps so far this season and may soon be promoted to High A Lake Elsinore.
