DiPoto to be new Padres GM?

Friday October 2, 2009

Sources within the Padres are now saying that Jerry DiPoto, VP of Player Personnel for the Diamondbacks, is to take Kevin Towers place as GM of the San Diego Padres.

As of Friday morning the Padres had not been given permission
by the Diamondbacks to talk to DiPoto, who is still under contract, about the job , but several people within the Padres organization have said that it is just a formality.

Dipoto, 41, a former major league relief pitcher with the Indians, Mets and Rockies, was a scout with the Boston Red Sox in 2003 & 2004 and became the head of scouting for the Colorado Rockies in 2006. When Josh Byrnes was hired as the GM of the Diamondbacks in 2007, he brought long time friend Dipoto along with him as the Director of Scouting and Player Personnel.

Dipoto will take over a farm system and major league team stocked well with young talent by outgoing GM Kevin Towers and Director of Player Personnel Grady Fuson.

Interesting that you are so quick to give Towers credit for the current minor league system, but when the discussion comes up of his 10 plus years of failures in dealing with the minor league system, they weren't his picks. The were somebody else's, the minor league staff.

I have no qualms about giving Towers credit for the current minor league, but that means he owns his horrible minor league draft results from '98 onward ....

  3. Towers handled the trades that brought in much of the young talent at the major league level and in the minors right now and Fuson handled the draft for the last 4 years.

TOGETHER they ARE responsible for the well stocked farm system and the good young talent on the major league team.

Towers has almost always allowed his staff to handle the preparation for the draft and most of the players picked.

Uhlman was responsible for the draft for most of Towers tenure and Fuson has handled it since the 2005 draft.

One of the things Moorad mentioned he wants in a GM is someone that is more directly involved in the draft and player development. Towers delegated those tasks.

Most of the glaring failures in drafting have A) not been handled directly by Towers and
    B) were often decisions where Moores over rode his FO. A great example is 2004 when Uhlman and Gayton wanted Stephen Drew or Jared Weaver, but Moores would not allow them to draft a Boras client. The same thing had also happened in 2003 when the Padres picked Stauffer (who was a top 10 talent before his injury was revealed) instead of Boras client John Danks.

From 1996 - 2005 the Padres had disasters of a draft really only from 2001-2004. Two of those are directly attributable to Moores refusal to draft any Boras clients.

Towers and Fuson have had to perform small miracles to restock a cupboard that was stripped bare by the drafts of the early part of the century.

Now 4 years after Fuson took over that farm system is starting to bear fruit.

  4. 2:14pm today on ESPN Insider in an article titled "Hirings on hold?", They quote Keith Law as saying his sources are ssying that the hiring of a new GM by the Padres is on hold to get the permission of the Commissioner

It also says that his sources say Jerry DiPoto is the leading candidate for the job.
