BBA Connie Mack Manager of the Year Award

Tuesday October 12, 2010

Well here it is. My first installment of the Annual BBA Awards.

As usual we start with the Manager of the Year Award. This season the BBA has named it the Connie Mack Award in honor of the 5 time World Series Champion Manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Athletics.

The Websoulsurfer pick for the Connie Mack Manager of the Year Award is:

Drum roll please...

Bud Black of the San Diego Padres.

Widely thought to be the worst team in the NL prior to the season, after leading the NL & NL West for most of the year, the Padres finished with 90 wins. Only one game out of 1st place.

Bud Black pulled a rabbit out of his hat with this Padres season and deserves to be named Manager of the Year, and maybe the 21st Century.

So there it is.

I have had my say. Now what do you think?

You may be underestimating the East Coast Bias of the baseball writers. Tom Krasovic agrees with you (as do I), but he noted that, talking to East Coast counterparts, they were raving about Charlie Manuel steering an injury-riddled Phillies team to the best record in the NL.

There's also the matter of baseball writers going with a winner, and after getting the Giants past the Braves, the Fox people are talking up Bochy, even though his team only improved from 88 wins to 92.

As much as I think you're right, I suspect whichever NL team makes it to the World Series will be led by the NL manager of the year.

  2. The Baseball Bloggers Alliance of which I am a member has over 200 members representing every major league team and general baseball. As a whole we voted on the Manager of the Year. Black won with Dusty Baker a close second. bochy was a distant 4th with Mauel behind him at 5th.

I think it will likely mirror the BBWAA vote as it did last year.
