Today the San Diego Padres announced that they have waived Pitchers Cha Seung Baek, Shawn Hill and Outfielder/Pinch Hitter Cliff Floyd.
All three players spent most if not all of the 2009 season on the DL.
Baek injured his forearm in Spring Training and injured his elbow during a rehab assignment in July. He never pitched for the Padres during the 2009 regular season.
The oft injured Hill was signed by the Padres on March 23rd and made just 3 starts before injuring his elbow against Pittsburgh on April 25th. He went under the knife for his 2nd Tommy John procedure and 5th over all surgery in June and was lost for the season.
Floyd was signed by the Padres to be a left handed power bat off the bench and to be the DH in interleague play they have been missing in recent years. Instead he injured his leg in spring training and was on the big league roster for just 18 days and 16 at bats before tearing the labrum in his right shoulder and going back on the DL for the rest of the 2009 season on June 18th.
This move was certainly not unexpected as none were expected to return in 2010. Baek and Hill will likely still be rehabbing from surgery next season and an injury plagued 36 year old Floyd may have seen his last days in a major league uniform.
The move cleared room on the 40 man roster which the Padres used to add Eulogio De La Cruz.
In other Padres news reliever Greg Burke underwent debridement surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder to remove dead or damaged tissue in the hopes that would allow healthy tissue to heal faster.

Baek on the road back

Padres pitcher Cha Seung Baek is once again n the road back to the starting rotation.
After spending the entire season so far on the DL, Baek joined the Padres in San Diego today and threw a bullpen session. If he rebounds well from it, he could start a minor league rehab assignment on Saturday July 11th.
Baek, who was expected to break spring camp as the #3 starter in the Padres rotation, went on the 15 day DL on March 30th and then was transfered to the 60 day DL on May 15th after suffering a setback in a minor league start for Portland on May 9th.
If all goes well Baek could join the Padres as soon as the Nationals series in late July.
By early August the Padres starting rotation could be Peavy, Young, Correia, Gaudin, Baek. It sure makes you wonder what if.

Reliever Luke Gregerson also threw a bullpen session at Petco today and is expected to start a rehab assignment by this weekend.

Cliff Floyd to have MRI on ailing knee

Cliff Floyd is returning to San Diego to have an MRI on his knee. Floyd's knee has had to be drained twice in the past three weeks.
Looks like the Padres in woes are returning in force in 2009. Already pitchers Mark Worrell(season ending elbow injury), Cha Seung Baek and Walter Silva have succumb to injuries since the start of spring training and promising young backup SS Everth Cabrera broke the hamate bone in his hand and is on the 60 day DL.
Floyd, who was already on the 15 day DL since late in Spring Training for a shoulder injury, has a history of knee problems and may have to have surgery and miss substantial time.
On a brighter note, Cha Seung Baek came out of his bullpen session on Tuesday well and may be able to start a rehab start as soon as Monday.

Padres starter Cha Seung Baek left the game in the 4th inning of today's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at their new spring training facility in Glendale Arizona.
After the game it was announced that Baek injured the forearm of his throwing arm and the extent of the injury was not known. Padres staff said Beak may be sidelined for up to 10 days and will miss his first scheduled start of the regular season.
Baek is still expected to make the Padres starting rotation.

A Position by Position Look at the 2008 Padres and My Thoughts about 2009.
This is the second part of a three part post.
Part Two – The Starting Pitchers
The Starting Rotation is a mess.
More than half of the players on the roster to start last year are gone.
A large portion of the players on the roster to END the season are gone.
The Starting Rotation as of today looks like:
Peavy - 2.85/1.18/.229 with 166 SO in 173.2 innings
– Had an off year in 2008 on the road and the trade rumors this off season had to have been draining, but Peavy is a true ACE and should bounce back with another sub 3 era, double digit win season in 2009
CY - 3.96/1.29/.221 with 93 SO in 102.1 innings
– Hit in face by batted ball and missed 17+ starts. Dropped his era from 4.91 to 3.96 in last 4 starts of season when he was awesome. Health is all he needs to have another double digit win season.
Baek - 4.62/1.33/.273 in 20 starts
– In his first year as a regular starter, Baek was an enigma. One game he would be brilliant, going 7 and giving up only 3 or 4 hits. The next he would give up 7 runs in 3 innings. You never seemed to know what you were going to get. If he is going to be holding down the #3-#4 slot in the rotation in 2009, let’s hope that we see more of the dominating pitcher he was in about half his 21 starts in 2008.
Reineke – 5.00/1.44/.219 in 3 appearances and 2 starts
- Reineke was on the DL with a stress fracture of his scapula to end the 2008 season and I have not heard yet if he will be available for the 2009 season. Let’s hope Reineke does not end up being a part of the rotation to start the 2009 season. To paraphrase an old saying, he is a jack of many pitches, master of none.
Geer - 2.67/1.41/.269 /LeBlanc - 8.02/2.06/.330/Inman
– Geer looked good in his 5 starts, LeBlanc looked bad 3 of his 4 starts, and Inman has never pitched above AA. At this point I would have to give the nod to Geer until his results say he not the one.
I can only hope someone is brought in as a middle of the rotation inning eater.
Would have loved to see the Padres sign Daniel Cabrera, but he signed a one year deal with the Nationals so he could stay in the DC/Maryland area.
Maybe Brad Penny can be convinced to take a one year deal with lots of incentives like the one Wolf signed last year, just to get a chance to kick the Dodgers behind a few times in 2009?
KT, if you read this:
1) Trade Kouzmanoff and a prospect for starting pitching. Someone who can fill that #3 slot behind CY and throw 200 innings. The Padres need an inning eater. The Twins seem to have the young starting pitchers the Padres need and they need a 3rd baseman.
2) Sign Kevin Corriea, Shawn Estes and Mark Prior to minor league deals just in case. The rotation needs the depth.
